Miss your Chiptole? Never fear because I think I just found something better (well at least a healthier alternative).

Hunter & Gatherer sells organic sauces, chocolates and ice cream on the first floor while it sells baked goods, veggies, pasta, nuts, granola and real restaurant foods on the second floor. For meals, they’ve got salads and wraps, but we decided to go for their main dish, which was “the bowl” (sound familiar?). Here’s how it works: you get to pick one base, a protein, veggies, and your choice of garnish.

My friend went for the bowl.

He had the mixed spring greens base, roasted piri piri chicken, roasted tomato and fennel and a sprinkle of garlic chips. According to him, the tomatoes were freshly roasted and the hot sauce he got from their “Sauce Bar” paired nicely with the tender chicken. Garlic chips were a bit overpowering.

I also build my own bowl.

My base was the umami lentils with shiitake mushrooms, braised bulgogi tofu, seasonal roasted veggies and toasted pumpkin seeds. I was a fan of the lentil texture paired with the soft tofu and pickled onions (which I got from the sauce bar as well).

Overall, highlights of this place was the friendly service and the healthy “Build Your Own Bowls” that provide a variety of different organic bases, protein and veggies tailored to your liking. Before we left, I also bought some of their gluten-free homemade chocolate cookies and a jar of their all natural almond peanut buttwe, which is made from a machine similar to the ones you’d find in Whole Foods.
