When given the task to show some friends from California around in our city, I didn’t blink an eye before making reservations for us at Barbarossa.

Recently renovated, this place has an exotic, pattern-heavy Moroccan theme with some decor items actually imported from Morocco and the Middle East. The restaurant sits in the heart of the People’s Park surrounded by a small tranquil lake and plenty of willowy greens. Despite the Moroccan interior, the menu serves Spanish cuisine with hot tapas, cheese plates, paella, meats and cold tapas.

Always gotta start off with a little wine to get things going.

We had the Spanish Cheese Selection to go with our wine.

First came our Mediterranean Salads.

Leafy greens, chopped tomatoes, grapes, sliced oranges mixed with a tangy salad dressing. Not usually a fan of most salad dressings, but this one is light and zesty – very much to my liking.

We also had the Caesar Salad.

Highly disappointed with this is pick. Sauce tasted funky and lacked the chicken slices were overly salty.

Next we had the Roasted Halibut with Confit Potato & Mushrooms.

Our guest was the one who tried this dish and according to him it was a thumbs up (yayyyy mission accomplished). Excellently seasoned and cooked until delicate.

We also had the Grilled Salmon & Sauteed Lentils.

Extremely pleased with how the crispy-skinned salmon and sautéed lentils came with a subtly sweet miso sauce that gave the dish an extra kick – recommended.

Overall, the highlights of this restaurant is the consistency of all their mains and the intimate, exotic atmosphere created by its eccentric décor and dimmed lights. If weather is nice they’ll even open their large glass windows to give you a better view of the lake. Reservations can be made online and they’ve got a nice bar and lounge on the second floor (cough cough ladies night). Just make sure you know how to walk to this place because it can be pretty hidden within the park. I was pretty pleased with my visit here this time and I’ll be back in the future to try their lunch set.
